UGS Advising
Advising is available to students admitted
to the Smith School of Business, and advising is located
in the Office of Undergraduate Studies,
1570 Van Munching Hall. The office is open
Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Advising appointments are generally
available from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Walk-in advising is also
available for Smith School Students who
have a quick question or immediate concern.
Typically walk-in advising is available
from 10:30 am-1pm Mon.-Fri.; however, to confirm
the weekly walk-in advising schedule, please
consult the posted schedule in the
Office of Undergraduate Studies, 1570 VMH,
or call (301) 405-2286 for a recording of the weekly
schedule.
At orientation, Smith School students
are assigned an academic advisor, and it
is recommended that students visit their
advisor each semester to ensure that they
are informed about current requirements
and procedures. Advising appointments can
only be made with a student's assigned advisor.
For walk-in advising, a student sees the
advisor who is on duty at that time. If you are
unsure who your advisor is, please stop
by or call the Undergraduate Studies
Office, 1570 VMH, 301-405-2286 for assistance. Students attending the Smith

Meet the Associate Dean and Advisors
Associate Dean

Patricia Cleveland - Dean Cleveland has served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business since July, 1998. She previously served as Assistant Dean for Student Academic Services, and MBA program advisor at the University of Hawaii’s College of Business Administration. Dean Cleveland has a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from the University of Kansas, with research interests in organizational change and implementation of information systems in ongoing organizations. She has taught Organizational Behavior, Strategic Human Resources and American Business Culture at the University of Hawaii. At the University of Maryland, she has been involved in curriculum and program development—including planning and implementation of the undergraduate Smith program at Shady Grove, and most recently the development of the Smith School’s new Undergraduate Fellows Program. She has also initiated a number of new “traditions” such as yearly leadership retreats and the STARS mentoring/outreach program to the local community. Dean Cleveland loves travelling internationally--and introducing students to the amazing wonders of the global business world. Her favorite destination so far is China, but hopes to visit Vietnam and Korea, as well as Tunisia with the first group of Smith International Fellows in January, 2008. Dean Cleveland is married to Gordon Cleveland, and has one son, Jack—a Maryland alum.
Academic Advisors
Ebony Fullwood - Ebony relocated to Maryland in the fall of 2002 from Raleigh, North Carolina. She received her B.A. in Public Policy Analysis from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.A. in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University. Before joining the staff at The University of Maryland at College Park, Ebony was an Academic Advisor at University of Maryland University College for three years, and for 4 years prior to that she worked at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in various student services positions. In her spare time, she enjoys watching movies, spending time with family and friends, attending concerts, and watching American Idol and college basketball games.

April Hamilton
- April is originally from the Bronx, New York and
earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Syracuse
University. She holds a Master of Science in Higher
Education with a concentration in Student Affairs and is
completing her certificate in Event Management from The
George Washington University. April is no stranger to University of Maryland as she
served three years with the Department of Resident Life.
Most recently, she was the Coordinator of Student Activities
at Anne Arundel Community College. April’s prior experience
also includes admissions, Greek life and teaching. Outside
of work, she is active in her Sorority, loves to plan
events, is an avid TV and movie fanatic and loves to eat out
(even though she secretly enjoys cooking).

Jessica Hegr -Jessica is a midwest native and graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She holds a B.S degree in Secondary Education and a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration. Before coming to the University of Maryland, she served as an Athletic Academic Advisor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Virginia Tech. When she is away from the office, Jessica enjoys traveling, reading, walking outdoors and spending time with friends and family.

Brian Horick
- Brian has served full-time in
an academic advising/ administrative
capacity at the Smith School of Business
since 1993. He has a B.S. in Finance
from Pennsylvania State University and
an MBA from University of Maryland.
Previously, Brian worked as an
accountant for several years. In his
free time he enjoys basketball,
gardening, fishing, and spending time
with his wife and three children.

Jason Jones - Jason
is originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, but has lived in Washington
D.C. since the spring of 2003. He graduated from Indiana University
with a B.A. in Spanish & Biology and a M.S. in Higher Education &
Student Affairs Administration. He has worked within Student
Activities and New Student Orientation, and he was an Academic
Advisor at University of Maryland University College for three
years. Outside of work, you’ll often find Jason exploring unique
restaurants in DC, enjoying theater presentations, standing in line
at midnight premiere showings of blockbuster movies, reading
peacefully on the Metro, watching Lost or American Idol, or
frequenting various karaoke establishments.


Evan Riddle - Evan has
come to the University of Maryland from Ohio, where he attained his B.S. in
Social Work and M.A. in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State
University. In his role as a graduate assistant, Evan has had experience in
advising undeclared students, mentoring student-athletes, event programming, and
teaching a career and life planning course. While away from the office, he
enjoys a number of outdoor activities and sports, music, and going out to eat
with friends and family.

Gabriele Salinas
-
Gabriele earned a B.A. in Political
Science/German from the University of
Western Illinois, and an M.A. degree in
Admin. Management: Public Administration
from Bowie State University (overseas
program). Gabriele is what is commonly
referred to as an “Army brat” which
means she grew up moving quite a bit as
determined by her father’s duty
assignments. Today that would probably
translate into the term “global nomad”.
During that time she grew up mostly in
Europe (Germany and Belgium) and spent a
few years in Virginia and Arizona. As an
adult she had a short stint in south
Texas before returning to Germany. She
has spent the last 9 years as an
undergraduate Academic Advisor for
University of Maryland University
College (UMUC) Europe in Heidelberg,
Germany. During off duty hours
Gabriele’s emphasis is on her son and
family. She is a people person, loves
animals and children and enjoys vacation
travel (to date mainly in Europe and the
Mediterranean). She is an avid reader
(both in English and in German) and
enjoys swimming, touring historic sites,
nature walks, international cuisine,
baking cookies and occasionally indulges
in really good chocolate, latte
macchiato, seafood and the odd crafts
project.

Shady Grove Advisors

Luke Glasgow
- Luke is an Associate Director at the Shady Grove campus where he manages the undergraduate studies office, assists with academic advising, and oversees the Robert H. Smith School of Business undergraduate programs. Prior to joining the Smith School in 2000, Luke worked for University of Maryland’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. Luke has spent his entire career in higher education and student services. He received an M.S. in Higher Education Administration from the Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. degree from the University of Baltimore. While away from the office, Luke enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, family and friends. He is proud of his Scottish heritage and attends Scottish festivals in the US and abroad. Luke enjoys swimming, traveling, and watching and cheering for the Terps.

Laurie Garcia
- Laurie is originally from Arkansas but has lived in Maryland for 22 years. After working for 20 years in the healthcare arena, she went back to school and received a B.A. degree from UMCP in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2005. After receiving her degree she worked for the UM Criminology Department at The Universities at Shady Grove before being hired with the Smith School of Business. As the Academic Coordinator, she works closely with faculty, staff and students addressing any requests they may have. Laurie enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, gardening, reading and traveling as the budget allows with two children in college.

Fellows and Special Programs Advisors
Students are encouraged to stop by the Fellows and Special Program Office if they have questions regarding scholarships, student leadership and involvement, or any of the Fellows Programs. The office is in 1407 Van Munching Hall and is generally open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Claire Jacobson - Claire comes to the Smith School from the Career Education Center at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Claire worked with students 1-1 as a career advisor. In addition, she managed the Career Center's special intern programs and planned it's large-scale special events In a previous position, she also managed all on-campus recruiting for undergraduate students. Claire has a M.A. in English from Georgetown University and a B.A. from Northwestern University. At Smith, Claire works with undergraduate professional development and alumni relations.

Valerie Johnson -
Valerie is originally from North Dakota. She earned her undergraduate degree in Child Development Family Science from North Dakota State University and her Master of Science in Educational Leadership (Higher Education) from the University of North Dakota. Valerie completed an internship in summer 2007 with the National Clearinghouse of Leadership Programs in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union. Since then she has admired College Park and is excited to be back working with the Robert H. Smith School of Business. As hobbies, Valerie enjoys scrapbooking, geocaching and traveling.

Dave Wilmes
- Dave is a student affairs professional with over eight years of experience providing support and guidance to college students. Originally from Missouri, Dave attended the University of Missouri where he earned a B. A. in Psychology. He then headed off to graduate school at Bowling Green State University in Ohio where he earned an M. A. in College Student Personnel. Dave has been with the Smith school since 2005 working first for the Office of Career Management and now for the Office of Undergraduate Studies. In his current role, Dave splits his time between advising SUSA and designing co-curricular programming for the Smith Fellows Programs. Outside of work, he enjoys movies, reading, catching up with friends, and spending time with his wife.

Graduate Assistants

Ankita Dhar -Ankita has a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Bhubaneswar, India and is currently enrolled for Professional Master's at UMD. Her favorite pastimes include music and movies. She also adore travelling. Her passion is reading. Ankita simply loves collecting and reading books, her pride includes being able to bring her library back home. Her latest craze is Sudoku.


David Pack - David is most recently from Cincinnati, OH, but spent a significant portion of his life in Virginia and North Carolina. He returned to Virginia to receive a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Virginia. There he was involved in Orientation, Class Councils, and his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta. These experiences led him to realize his true passion of working with college students. For two years after graduation, David worked in rural Nelson County, VA as part of UVA’s College Guides, a pilot Access program aimed at increasing post-secondary enrollment from underserved populations in Virginia. He is here at Maryland pursuing a Master’s in College Student Personnel. In the Undergraduate Studies Office, David serves as the Graduate Assistant for Leadership and Fellows Programming, working to create exciting co-curricular opportunities for our Smith Fellows. In his free time, he enjoys spending time and taking trips with friends, exploring Washington and its environs, and finding excuses to road-trip back down to Charlottesville.


Ben Schwinke - Ben grew up in rural Iowa. He graduated with a BA in Psychology from Central College in Pella, IA. Ben is currently enrolled in the Rehabilitation Counseling MS program at UMCP. Ben has many hobbies, including playing percussion and cooking.

Mitalee Mulpuru - Mitalee is originally from Hyderabad, India, though she has spent most of her life outside the city. She has completed her undergraduate degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in telecommunications. Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, she worked with many telecom companies including IBM. In her free time, she enjoys playing the guitar, reading and spending time with friends and a cup of hot Indian tea.


Abishek Sridharan - Abishek is from Chennai, a port city in south India . He finished his undergraduate courses in Information Technology from Anna University, Chennai. He is presently a graduate student in the Telecommunications Program at the University of Maryland. Abishek works with the office of Undergraduate Studies and helps maintain the UNet portal. In his spare time, Abishek likes to travel and watch movies. Recently he discovered that he loves driving and also that it's the best way to travel in the United States.


Miki Yoshioka - Miki is originally from Hilo, Hawaii. She recently received a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Sociology from the George Washington University. She is currently working towards a Masters in Education Policy and Leadership with a specialization in Higher Education Administration at the University of Maryland, College Park. Miki has prior experience in residential life, admissions, advancement, multicultural student affairs and orientation. In her free time, she loves spending time with her friends, watching the Food Network, and exploring the DC Metro area.

Monica Shitut -Monica Shitut is originally from Mumbai, India. She is currently doing my Masters in Information Management at the University of Maryland, College Park. She has a Bachelors degree in Engineering in Information Technology (IT) from India. Prior to coming here for her Masters, she worked as a software engineer in an IT firm.
In her free time, she loves traveling and exploring new places, catching up on the latest movies and dishing up new cuisines.
