Frequently Asked Questions
- I dont have a 4.0 GPA, is it likely that I will receive a scholarship?
In the 2006-2007 academic year, we were able to award scholarships to 100% of applicants who had "financial need", many of who had competitive GPAs (but not 4.0s). So YES, you should apply, fill out the scholarship application and see what happens.
- I'm a freshman/sophomore/transfer student and I dont have a resume...
We understand that students are at different levels of their development. We view the scholarship application process (as well as RSVPing and other application processes) as opportunities for you to practice refining your professional skills. Use this scholarship application as incentive to complete your first professional resume. Over time and experience your resume will become stronger. For assistance and feedback, go to the Office of Career Management (OCM, 4th Floor Van Munching Hall)...they have staff dedicated to YOU.
- I'll graduate in December, should I still apply?
When a student receives a scholarship, it is equally divided between the Fall and Spring semesters. If you will only be here the Fall semester, you will receive your Fall award and your Spring award will be given to another deserving student. So Yes, APPLY. A semester award is better than no award,
- I don't have "financial need", should I apply?
You are strongly encouraged to complete the FAFSA application each year, as you may be eligible for need-based scholarships. If you do not have financial aid eligibility this year, you should still apply.
Scholarship recipients are selected based on their credentials and available funds. Last year, much of our scholarship money was awarded to students with "financial need", however, that could change from year to year. Because you don't know the criteria for each scholarship, apply and see what happens. You may receive a scholarship that is not reserved for students with "financial need".
- The Spring Deadline has passed, can I just apply in the Fall?
Unfortunately, No. The scholarship process takes place at one time only, the Spring Semester (the application opens in March and ends the last day of the Spring semester). So if you miss the application deadline, you will need to wait until the next academic year to apply for scholarships. Please don't procrastinate! Work on your resume and essay in chunks. You don't have to complete the application in one sitting, you can save your application as a draft and return to it as frequently as you need.
- I am not yet admitted to the Smith School. May I apply for scholarships?
As a new applicant to the Smith School, you will be considered for scholarships awarded by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the point of entry. Therefore, you do not need to submit an application for these scholarships, and are too early to be considered for scholarships posted on UNet.
- I am a Logistics major and I hear there is a separate process to apply for LTSCM departmental scholarships. How do I learn about and apply to LTSCM scholarships? And, is there a different deadline?
The Robert H. Smith School of Business is fortunate to have a series of scholarships for LTSCM Majors. Information on the Smith School LTSCM scholarships is emailed to LTSCM Majors and posted on the Undergraduate website about the time of Spring Break with the scholarship applications usually being due in early May. In addition to the Smith School LTSCM scholarships, there are also scholarships available for LTSCM majors from various professional organizations including the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, APICS, the Institute for Supply Management (Richter Scholarship), the Propeller Club, and the National Defense Transportation Association. To apply for these scholarships, go back to the Scholarship Page, and find the link that says "To Apply for LTSCM departmental scholarships, Click HERE". LTSCM scholarships open at the same time as Smith Scholarships, but please be aware of the earlier deadline (April 18).
- I am a Logistics major, can I apply for the LTSCM departmental scholarships AND the Smith Scholarships?
Yes, we encourage LTSCM students to apply for both LTSCM departmental and Smith Scholarships. Please note that you will need to complete both applications separately and the LTSCM departmental scholarship application deadline ends earlier.
